We often see hitchhikers(搭便车的人), standing by the side of the road, thumb sticking out, waiting for a lift. But it is getting          nowadays. What killed hitchhiking?             is often mentioned as a reason. Movies about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime            many drivers off picking up hitchhikers.             no single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester            reflects the safety fear:            , strangely dressed man is seen as dangerous.
But the reason may be           complex: hitchhiking happens where people don’t have cars and transport services are           . Plenty of people          hitchhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of car ownership in the UK means the few people lift hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can’t they          cars? Why can’t they take the coach or the train?
Three-quarters of the UK population have             a car; many of the             will be quite old. The potential hitchhiking population is therefore small.         my trip proves it’s still possible to hitchhike. The people who picked me up were very interesting lawyer, retired surgeon, tank commander, carpenter, man who live in an isolated farmhouse and a couple             in the mountains. My conclusion is that only really interesting people are mad enough to pick up fat blokes(家伙) in red, spotted scarves. Most just wanted to do someone a good turn; a few said they were so surprised to see a hitchhiker that they couldn’t help         .
The future of hitchhiking most           lies with car-sharing organized over the Internet, via sites such as hitchhikers. org. But for now, you can still stick your thumb out (actually, I didn’t do much of that,            just to hold up my destination sign) and people—wonderful, caring, sharing, unafraid people—will stop.
In the UK, with its cheap          and reasonable rail service, I don’t think I’ll make a habit of it. But having enjoyed it so much, I’m ready now to do a big trip              Europe and beyond. In the 1970s a female friend of my wife’s hitchhiked to India. How wonderful it would be to have another go,           Afghanistan might be a challenge. I wish I’d got that tank commander’s mobile number.

“The way we choose to respond when others make mistakes can cause them to feel ashamed or can allow them to remember our kindness and share our stories with future generations.”
——Michelle Sedas
When I read the above quote I couldn’t help but          Doris. She had been a science teacher by          ,but she also was a very           person. All around her room were dolls that she had made. They were the most interesting dolls I’d ever seen;each was very             from the other.
By talking to Doris I learned she’d          a class in doll making. One day while I was in her room she took one of the dolls out of the case to             me.This doll was very             with fine artistic work.I was             that anyone could do such unique work.
As Doris was         the doll carefully in her hand,I could see a slight break in the skirt.I was          to know what happened.Doris said that on the way to class she           the side of the skirt. She expressed how scared she was and almost didn’t go to            at a11.When it came her          to show the doll to the teacher, she had to point out the             in the skirt.Doris felt for sure that the doll would be            because of it.Much to her surprise the teacher told her she was just going to             this break and grade the doll on the other good              it had.Doris shared that this remark and             from the teacher changed her life.
This teacher could have made Doris feel             by her mistake. But           her willingness to ignore the mistake,Doris was sharing her kindness with the next generation.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought        . My complaints, even self-justified shouting, were always landing on        ears. Very often a whole hour’s scolding would end with their          into tears, I felt very frustrated. I realized I needed to        my method of “mothering”.
One day when they were at school, I spent some time        their rooms. On their desks, in plain         , I left the cards: “Dear Bill (the other card was        to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy.”        arriving back, the children were        excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy _        for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and        asking them to play a certain violin            . Each day, thank--you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas         .
Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little        : “If you can finish your homework and            your lessons before dinner, I’ d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in         of well done jobs the day            .
I can’t remember how long “the Room Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its(贴条). The bathroom mirror became the           centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be posted.
We all benefited from and          the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

A  thread  of          appeared  during  those  gloomy  (阴暗的)  days.  It  was  a  rainy  dusk  when  I  went  outside  into  the  rain  and  walked  in  the  street.  Suddenly  the  rain  stopped!  I  raised  my  head,  and  found  that  “the  sky”  was  in  fact  a  dark  blue  umbrella.  Then  I  heard  a  deep  voice  say,  “Why  not            without  an  umbrella?”  It  was  a  one-legged  man,  “If  you  run,  you  won’t  get  so  wet.”  His  words           me  deeply.  Without  my  father’s  protection,  was  I  only  a  slave  to  fate﹙命运﹚?
While  walking  with  him  in  the  rain,  I  knew  that  his  dream  was  once              by  an  accident.  He  was  glad  that  he  didn’t  lose          and  still  “ran”  on  the  road  of  life.  Facing  this  guy,  I  had  no  pity,  but  admiration.
Inspired  by  his           ,  I  went  to  a  city  in  the  south  and  became  an  insurance  representative.  After  two  years’  “running”,  I  got  somewhere  and  my  family  situation  became  better             .  I  went  back  to  school  and  eventually  succeeded  in  being  admitted  to  a  university.
Everything  is  so  simple:  to  run  without  an  umbrella!  When  you  run  out  of  the            season  of  your  life,  there  will  be  a  bright  sky  ahead  of  you.

Tears clouded my eyes as I stood in our washing room, holding Brett's jeans and shirt full of burn holes. Tired and defeated, I         to the floor. The clothes were just one more thing Brett had         . He often got almost everything in the house out of        . Many windows in our house needed repair due to his breaking           to steal money when he chose to live on the street. Yet none of this could compare to the emotional          Brett had done to our once quiet home.
Brett came to live with us when he was 12 years old. During the next few years I had dealt with Brett as          as possible, but inside I was shouting,"I don't want him in my house another day, Lord! I just can't          him!" Having wiped my tears, I continued        him as before.
When Brett was nearly 18, he landed again in Juvenile Hall(少管所). After that, my husband and I had to send Brett to a boarding school for helping          teens.
At the         ceremony, each graduate held a white rose to give to the person who had         the most to him or her.
Brett spoke           to his parents and then spoke to me, "You did so much. You were always there, no matter           happened. My mom and dad, I was their kid. But you,           troubled enough by me, always           me such love. And I want you to k      I love you for it."
, I stood as Brett placed the white rose in my hand and hugged me          .
At that moment, tears           in my eyes again, this time not for disappointment but for         . Although I had struggled with silent        toward my stepson, Brett had seen only my actions. Love is action. We may not always have positive feelings about certain people in our lives, but we can love them.
