Great white sharks have become well known in a bad way, for being scary.      . However, you are more likely to be hit by lightning than attacked by a great white shark.
One reason why people don’t like great white sharks is that they are huge. They grow to be nearly 21 feet long and can weigh up to 5,000 pounds. That is about two cars long! But the size is not typical. Most great whites are smaller, about 10 to 15 feet long.      .

Linda and her brother, John, saved money for many years. One day, Linda emptied her money jar. “I would like to help other people with the money,” she said. John also emptied his money jar.
“We can do a lot for others with all the money,” John said with a smile. “But who shall we help?” Linda asked. “Let’s help our neighbors, Billy and his sister, Rose. I have found that there are some holes in their shoes,” John said. “We could buy some new shoes for them,” Linda said.
Linda and John told their mother their plan. She was glad and took them to a shoe store at once. Linda picked out a pair of shoes for Rose. John picked out a pair of shoes for Billy. They put the two pairs of shoes into two beautiful boxes. When it was darker, John walked to Billy and Rose’s house quietly. He put the boxes near the door, and knocked hard, and then he ran away quickly.
Billy and Rose came out. “Look! There are presents for us. Someone left them here,” Billy said. They looked around, but they couldn’t find anyone. They took the boxes inside happily.
The next morning, when Linda and John went out, they saw Billy and Rose playing outside. They were both wearing their new shoes. Linda and John were so happy because they could help others.

As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a serious stomachache. Neither Al nor his wife took it very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
The death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, so Al always felt he was guilty(内疚). To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol(酒精) for help.
Al began to lose everything he had—his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al’s death, I thought, “What a complete failure(失败)!”
I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn’t heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘Love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized that I had been a fool to tell Al as a failure. He had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.

Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke very quickly and I couldn’t understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because I didn’t know how to read the words correctly. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything in class.
Then one day I watched an English movie—Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie. So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although(尽管) I could not understand everything the characters(角色) said, their body language and the expressions(表情) on their faces help me get the meaning(意思). I understood I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. I found out that listening to something interesting is the secret to the language learning. During the 15 days from New Year’s Eve to Lantern Festival(元宵节), Beijing was affected （受影响）by haze（雾霾） .Do you know what the haze is ? Today I will introduce it to you .
Haze is air pollution(空气污染) in which is mixed up with dust, smoke and other dry particles (和灰尘,烟雾和其他干燥粒),and it covers(掩盖) our blue sky ,so we can’t see sunny days. It often happens in winter and spring.
