When I was young,I lived in Scotland with my parents.I had a good time there.

One morning, I ran to the garden, and said to the old Scotsman who worked there. "Today I am going up the mountain for berries."

"No, no, Missey, not today. "he said, "It will rain."

"No, it will not rain. "I said, "The sun is up. The cook says it will be fine. The glass in the hall does not say rain.

"Tuts, tuts. "said the old man, "I care for no suns, or cooks, or glasses. The pimpernel (海绿)says it will rain, and so it will rain. Flowers, Missey, always tell the truth. When they say rain, go and get your umbrella."

Sure enough, by noon the rain was pouring down. After that, I looked with great respect at the tiny flower, sometimes brickred, sometimes blue, which could tell about the weather. But the pimpernel is not the only plant that is a weather prophet.

If you go into the garden, and find the African marigolds shut after seven o' clock in the morning, you may be pretty sure that there will be a rainy day. There is a little single marigold which shuts up in a hurry if the sky becomes clouded. It is called the "rainy﹣marigold".

Most plants which we call"weather prophets"shut up for rain. But some plants open for rain. The cause of the opening and closing is probably the difference in light. Most likely these plants shut their flowers because there is too little light.

But you know there are some plants which become smaller in a strong light and love the shade. You will find that most shade﹣ loving plants, as the verbenas, do not close for rain.

Lilies, tulips and other flowers that love the sun shut for rain. Tulips are careful not to open their cups very wide in the morning if it is likely to rain. The roses make no change. They seem not to fear wet.

On the whole, you may be pretty sure, if you go into your garden, and find many flowers﹣as tulips, marigolds and morning glories﹣﹣shut, it will be a stormy day, unfit for picnics or long walks.

(1)The plants which are"weather prophets"

A. become smaller in a strong light

B. tell about the weather

C. open for rain and fear light

D. love shade and wet

(2)You can go out for a picnic when

A. the morning glories and lilies do not shut

B. the African marigolds shut after 7: 00 a.m.

C. the pimpernels open wide in the daytime

D. the roses and tulips shut in the sunshine

(3)What do we know from the passage?

A. The flowers have four ways to help people to get information about weather.

B. The glass in the hall has magic for the writer's family to know about weather.

C. We can know about weather by keeping many roses at home or in the garden.

D. Missey will probably know about weather by watching flowers from now on.

(4)The passage is mainly about

A. watching flowers carefully before going out

B. learning to watch flowers from the old Scotsman

C. the importance of growing flowers in the garden

D. the relationship between some flowers and weather

The human body is a machine that can raise lots of interesting questions. Why,for example, are yawns(呵欠)contagious(传染的)?What's up with ice﹣cream headaches? Here are answers to these and other questions about our bodies.

Why do I get a headache when I eat ice cream too quickly?

Scientists aren' t exactly sure what causes the brain freeze when we eat ice cream or other super﹣cold foods too quickly, though some believe it's the result of changed blood flow in the nervous stem.Blood vessels in the head tighten to stop the loss of body heat and then relax to let blood flow rise;that sudden rush of blood is what causes the headache. You can improve an ice﹣cream headache by rapidly rubbing your tongue across the roof of your mouth to help warm up things.

What causes my stomach to make a low continuous noise when I'm hungry?

Actually, your stomach makes noise whether you're hungry or full;you just hear it more clearly when you're hungry.Think of your digestive tract(消化道)as a really long tube lined with smooth muscle tissue. These muscles move food, fluids and gas through your digestive tract. A .It can make you feel embarrassed(尴尬的) but is nothing to worry about.

Why do I blush when I'm embarrassed?

When you're embarrassed, your brain releases a shot of adrenaline(肾上腺素),which makes your heart race and blood vessels become larger in size. All this happens to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body in a fight﹣on﹣ flight reaction(对抗反应).There are a lot of tiny blood vessels in your face, which turn noticeably redder from this sudden rush of blood. As for the actual function of blushing, researchers are still trying to find that one out.

     Why are yawns contagious?

Have you ever yawned in front of someone, only to have them yawn right back? It's a common thing but researchers don't have a good explanation for it.They do,however, know this happens only with humans and chimpanzees( 黑猩猩).A bigger question puzzling scientists is why we yawn at all It used to be thought that yawning showed that oxygen to the brain was not enough, but that's just a myth.A growing body of research now shows that yawning is nature's way of keeping our brains cool.

(1)What is the meaning of the underlined word tighten?

A.变松

B.变紧

C.变短

D.变长

(2)Which of the following sentences can be filled in the blank?

A.And that's what you're hearing when your stomach makes noise.

B And that's why you're so hungry when your stomach is empty.

C.And that's what makes you feel uncomfortable when you're full.

D.And that's how it makes a difference to your digestive tract.

(3)Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.There is no way for you to improve an ice﹣cream headache.

B.Researchers have found out the actual function of blushing.

C.Your stomach makes noise only when you are hungry.

D.Researchers don't have a good explanation for why yawns are contagious.

(4)What is the best title of the passage?

A.Some Interesting Facts

B.Our Strange Body

C.Some Useful Discoveries

D.Our Amazing Feelings

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened(威胁)by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that influences sea animals comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions(爆炸), ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels(分贝) measured(测量) in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety﹣ five would have the same effect(效果).

Some scientists have planned to set a noise limit(限度)of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have found that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales(鲸鱼).

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously hurt some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whale's ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed.

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds disagree to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists think that noise is a greater danger than they believed. It's time for them to take action to help ocean animals.

(1)Which of the following is not caused by human beings?

A. The noise of industrial underwater explosions.

B. The noise of ocean drilling.

C. The sound of underwater earthquakes.

D. The noise of ship engines.

(2)What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A. The same noise measures differently on land and in the ocean.

B. Different places may have different types of noises.

C. The noises can cause humans to lose hearing.

D. There are different kinds of natural sounds in the ocean.

(3)Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Powerful underwater explosions aren't harmful to whales' ears.

B. Many researchers are against the noise limit of 120 decibels.

C. Noises cannot cause whales' death.

D. The noise limit of 120 decibels would hardly influence the industrial research.

(4)According to the passage ,we can infer that scientists will probably

A. work hard to cut down natural sounds

B. stop industrial and scientific research in oceans

C. try their best to make no noise

D. protect ocean animals from harmful noises

Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone?

If yes, you're not alone. These days, many people are facing the stress in the use of mobile phones. They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and keep checking their social media apps to get the latest updates(更新).

A report from Google shows that 70 percent of people don't want to spend much time on their phones. This is why Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new Android operating system(安卓操作系统). This new app includes functions(功能) that help users manage the time. For example, users can see how many times they've unlocked their phone, how many times they've checked their social media apps, and how much time they spend on each app every day.

Once the users see this information, they'll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer(计时) function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they've hit the limit, they won't be able to use the app until the next day. And with another function, the app gets incoming calls silent when the user puts the phone face down.

If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours on their phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that.

After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps? The easiest answer would be just to use your willpower.

(1)Where does the users' stress come from?

A. Too many updates of the apps.

B. Too many functions of the apps.

C. Too much information they receive.

D. Too much time they spend on the phone.

(2)Which of the following is NOT included in Dashboard's functions?

A. It stops the users from using their willpower.

B. It checks how much time the users spend on apps.

C. It lists how many times the users have unlocked the phone.

D. It shows how many times the users have checked social media apps.

(3)What does the underlined word "limit" in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. 目的

B. 标准

C. 许可

D. 限制

(4)Which picture shows the phone gets incoming calls silent?

(5)What does the writer think of Dashboard?

A. It's design is perfect.

B. It may be helpful to some people.

C. It needs more functions.

D. It has too many functions.

Living places

The home of the elephant is in the deep forest. It is the largest of all land animals, and is found both in Asia and Africa. One of the main places in Asia where the elephant lives is the island of Ceylon. The huge forests on the island become the home of thousands of elephants. The trees grow thick and tall. They make many parts almost dark, while bright sunlight is above and around them.

    Living habits

The elephant likes the deep part and the coolest places of the forest. There he will stand swinging his ears, to drive away the flies; or he will pull down a branch (树枝) from a tree to fan himself. He likes bathing, and to be near a lake or running water. There he takes in the water with his trunk, and spreads it all over his body.

Sometimes people cry when they are sad. Other times people cry tears of joy. But your eyes make tears all the time, whether you are crying or not. Do you know the tears help keep your eyes healthy? They keep your eyes from drying out. A special area of the eye drips (滴) all the time. It keeps the eye humid.

If you look in a mirror, you can see tiny holes in the corners of your eyes. Each hole leads to a small tube that runs to your nose. Tears run slowly into this tube drip by drip. Day and night the holes drain (流走) the tears away. If they didn't, you would always look as if you were crying.

If you begin to cry, there are many more tears. The holes can't drain all of them. Then extra tears run out onto your face.

Tears help keep eyes safe. If there is something harmful in the air, the eyes fill with tears. These tears coat your eyes. They keep the harmful air out.

Contact lenses (隐形眼镜) can make the eyes too dry. Some people have to add tears to their eyes.

They buy bottles of eye drops to keep their eyes wet.

(1)Eyes make tears no matter how people feel.

(2)When you cry, tears run into your nose or onto your face.

(3)If there is something harmful in the air, tears protect your eyes by covering them.

What was discovered by accident? The answer is penicillin(青霉素). It kills germs. By killing germs, it saves lives. Suppose you are sick. You go to a doctor. She examines you. She says you have a" staph'" infection(葡萄球菌感染). She gives you some medicine. You take it. The medicine knocks out the staph. Soon you are well. Before penicillin, this would not happen. Staph was almost sure death.

Everyone wanted a medicine. Laboratories worked day and night. They grew the staph in small dishes. Then they tried to kill it. Nothing worked.

The laboratory dishes had covers on them. They kept things from falling into dishes. Molds(霉菌)were a big worry. They are always in the air. You can't see them. They're too small. There are thousands of different molds. Molds can make an experiment (实验)fail. That's why dishes are covered.

Dr. Alexander Fleming was working to kill the staph germ. He worked for years. One day he took a cover off a dish. He looked inside. There was a thick growth of staph germ. There was also some mol

Most people agree that trees look nice, but not everyone knows that trees can also help cities save money. A few years ago, the US Forest Service studied trees in Chicago. They found that just one tree can save a city hundreds of dollars over its lifetime.

Trees can save money by helping people save energy(能源). Trees stop the sun shining on buildings. They also block(挡住) the winter wind. That helps people use less energy to make their homes or offices warm or cool. Saving energy is saving money.

Trees have another way to help a city save money. When it rains, there will be a lot of water in a city's sewers (下水道). Cities need lots of money to clean that water. But before the rainwater gets to the dirty sewers, trees can take some into themselves. With the help of trees, there is less water to clean.

Artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) can help us make phone calls. It can guide us to where we want to go. It can play games. And now, AI can do even more things.

Researchers from Microsoft have created the first machine translation system that can translate news articles from Chinese to English, Business Standard reported.

According to Microsoft's official website, researchers tested the system by asking it to translate hundreds of sentences taken from news stories. Then, language experts compared the results to two translations that were done by humans. The experts said that the system's translations were as good as the human translations.

Machine translation is always challenging. This is partly because different words can be used to express the same meaning. It can be hard to say which word is more "correct".

Experts used several methods to improve the system's translation abilities. "Much of our research is really learned from by how we humans do things," lead researcher Liu Tieyan said.

One method is called dual learning (对偶学习).In this method, the system translates every sentence from Chinese to English,as well as translates the sentences back from English into Chinese. This way,the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes. This is similar to what humans do to make sure their translations are exact.

Another method makes use of deliberation networks (推敲网络).The researchers taught the system to repeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over.Gradually, the system can improve the quality of its translations. This is similar to how people correct their own writing by going through it again and again.

(1)Microsoft created a system that can

A. make phone calls

B. give people directions

C. play games with people

D. translate news articles

(2)What did the experts say about the system's translations?

A. They were not accurate.

B. They were as good as human translations.

C. They were better than human translations.

D. It's hard to tell whether the translations were correct.

(3)Dual learning trains the system to translate

A. more quickly

B. different sentences

C. more accurately

D. the same sentence repeatedly

(4)The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to

A.dual leaning

B.The process

C.The system

D.People's own writing

(5)What is the main idea of the story?

A. What artificial intelligence can do for us.

B. How sentences are translated from Chinese to English.

C. How the machine translation system was developed.

D. Why Microsoft created a machine translation system.

You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything? Well, it's not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table.Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what 's going on, then tell your brain. and your brain decides how quickly you need to react (反应), and then your muscles (肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!

The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells (细胞) in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3.000 years to count them all!

Your brain stops growing when you're 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won't be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long﹣ term memory establishment (建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.

So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

Hundreds of years ago, no dandelions (蒲公英) grew in North America. Then people came from Europe. They had dandelion seeds on their clothes. The seeds fell from their clothes onto the ground. Since then, dandelions have spread all over.

Most people believe that dandelions are weeds. They do not want them in their gardens. But some people think that dandelion flowers are pretty. And others think that dandelions taste good. They cook dandelion leaves or put them into a fresh salad. The leaves must be picked before the flowers come out or they will not taste good. Some people make dandelion flowers into wine.

Dandelions do not die easily. If the winter is not very cold, their leaves may stay green.

When the spring arrives, their flowers come out. Each night their bright yellow flowers close up. When the sun shines the next day, they open up again. Dandelion flowers are very unusual. They do not have to get pollen (花粉) from another dandelion flower in order to form seeds. So after several days, the yellow flower turns white and soft. A tiny brown seed forms at the bottom of each white petal (花瓣). When the wind blows, the petals float away.

Each white petal carries a seed away. This lets the dandelions spread their seeds all over.

New dandelions grow where the seeds land.

(1)The underlined word "weeds" means

A. pretty flowers

B. fresh vegetables

C. wild plants

D. green trees

(2)When is the best time to pick dandelion leaves to eat?

A. After their flowers come out.

B. After their flowers turn white.

C. Before their flowers come out.

D. Before their flowers close up.

(3)What is the best title for this passage?

A. The History of Dandelions

B. Dandelions: Flowers or Food

Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal their size.

European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries to fight the aging process (过程) in human beings.

Last week, the group of scientists said they had found important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes (染 色 体), a line of genes found in the nucleus(核) of cells. The scientists were most interested in parts connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端 粒). Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes, which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down.

A report on bats was published this month in the journal Science Advances.

Among the leaders of the study was Emma Teeling, a biologist with University College Dublin in Ireland. Teeling said studying long﹣living mammals that have developed ways to fight aging "is another way to prove the molecular(分 子) basis of extended ‘health length.'" She added that studying bats made scientists able to learn more about the processes "that drive healthy aging."

The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse﹣eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years.

The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41 years.

The scientists' findings suggest that these bats' cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process. Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse﹣eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that

The scientists found that Eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rodent, the naked mole rat.

阅读C篇,根据文后要求作答.

Water is a liquid (液体); but it can also be a solid when it is very cold and turns to ice.It can also be a gas, when it evaporates (蒸发) and become water vapour (水蒸气).

The water cycle

Water is very important, and without it life on Earth should be impossible. The oceans that

cover three quarters of the Earth's surface can be thought of as our great water reservoirs. All the

time, water is being evaporated from the ocean's surface by the warmth of the sun.High in the sky this water vapour, turns into clouds which drift (漂浮 ) over the land, often creating rainfall. As the rain falls,it seeps (渗入 ) into the soil and then into rivers that flow back into the oceans, where it is ready to begin all over again!

下而是被打乱的有关The water cycle(水循环)的信息,请根据短文内容重新排序.
