If you wear glasses, there's good news for you.(1) A new study has found that needing to wear glasses is connected with higher levels of intelligence.

In the study, researchers from the University of Edinburgh studied data(数据)on brainpower and genes. Genes, made up of DNA, are information in the cells of our body. They determine how we look and how our bodies work. (2) They found a connection between brainpower and physical characteristics including eyesight and health. People who were more intelligent were more likely to have genes that might show they need to wear glasses. The researchers also found that being smarter has some advantages. They found ways in which smarter people have fewer health problems.

    (3) They are not proved(证实的)causes. It is easy to prove that two things are connected. It is harder to prove that one thing, like intelligence, causes the other, like needing glasses.

Forget genes though. Wearing glasses makes people think you are more intelligent, even if you don't need them. A number of studies have found that people who wear glasses are usually seen as smarter, more hard﹣working and honest. (4) They get the people they work for on trial(审 判)to wear glasses. Glasses are also used to show someone is intelligent in movies and on TV.

    (5) People who do not need glasses sometimes wear them. They wear them just to look smart or cool. Glasses are not only for needs. Wearing glasses can also be cool. Many movie stars are fans of fashion glasses.

A.Many lawyers use this to help them.

B.We must try our best to protect our eyes.

C.However,these are all simply connections.

D.You might be smarter than those who don't.

E.Ideas about wearing glasses have begun to change.

Are you short﹣sighted? If you are, your parents might have tried to do something to fix it, such as having you get an eye massage(按摩), take medicine or even get surgery(手术). People who offer these services or products often say that they can reduce or even cure short sight.

However, you will no longer see advertisements like this before long. The government has issued a notice to ban(禁止) businesses from using words like "recovery" or "short sight cure" in

their advertisements.

The notice says that short sight cannot be completely cured with current medical technology. Therefore, these advertisements could mislead children and their parents.

An 11﹣year﹣old blind girl is proud of walking alone every day to and from school. Why? She has to walk past so many barriers (障碍物) in her way.The girl's home is near the school, yet her mother follows her without letting her know.

The case of the girl shows the barrier﹣free facilities (设施) are not enough in her city. Many other cities are short of barrier﹣free facilities as well. There's no well﹣designed path for the blind. In fact. in the early 2000s, some cities started to build barrier﹣free facilities for disabled people. However, almost 20 years later, only a few large cities have had facilities of high quality.

It's common that sidewalks are taken up with barriers. Few workers are sent to move them away, so it's dangerous for the blind to walk on them. Also, some other barrier﹣free facilities are badly destroyed(毁坏). Only a few workers are assigned (分配) to do the task of repairing the broken ones.

Some ideas can make a difference﹣build more barrier﹣free facilities and employ more of them require money. In a word, more money is needed to carry on with the work. It's our duty to make life easy for disabled people, so that they can live without barriers some day.

Trees in cities "live fast but die young" compared to forests in the countryside, warns a new study.

Researchers found that trees in cities die younger than ones in the countryside because of the higher levels of CO2. City﹣living trees suffer(遭受) a loss of carbon storage(碳储量). That means trees produce less energy from the air.

Now researchers say more must be done to deal with the situation. Ian Smith, a PhD student of Boston University in the United States, said, "Cities are in the important position in fighting against rising temperatures and increasing CO2.". "We find that tree planting alone may not be enough to keep and increase city canopy cover(树冠覆盖率). Because of the age and size of the present canopy, efforts to improve and protect tree health are badly needed for increasing city tree cover and canopy cover."

The research team used a model to watch changes among street trees for several planting and management methods. Researchers also used the model to watch tree growth, death and planting rates(率)both among trees in Boston city and forests in the countryside in Massachusetts.

It was discovered that rates of carbon cycling and growth rates among city trees were nearly four times faster than those in the countryside. However, loss of carbon storage and death rates are also higher, especially death rates are more than double higher than those in countryside forests.

The study, published in PLOS ONE, has reminded scientists to encourage communities to do more to plant and protect trees. It is important to increase city canopy cover and carbon storage.

Researchers say planting and protecting will be needed to make sure cities can develop healthily, but more needs to be done to have a better understanding of city trees ﹣﹣﹣which may be different from countryside forests.

(1)According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A. The more carbon storage loses, the more energy the trees produce from the air.

B. The higher the levels of CO2 are, the harder it will be for the plants to survive.

C. If we plant enough trees, we are sure to increase city canopy cover.

D. Cities do better in fighting against rising temperatures and increasing CO2

(2)Paragraph 4 mainly tells us

A. the results of the study

B. the discoveries from the researchers

C. the methods of the study

D. the suggestions from the researchers

(3)What does" those" in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A. Death rates.

B. Rates of carbon cycling.

C. Growth rates.

D. Loss of carbon storage.

(4)The writer's main purpose of writing the passage is

A. to teach us how to improve and protect tree health

B. to warn us that trees in cities live fast but die young

C. to let us have a better understanding of city trees

Some people seem to have unusual memories. Zheng Aiqiang, a "memory athlete" on TV show Super Brain, can remember 2, 660 numbers in just one hour!

You would think people like him must have special brains. But according to a recent study by researchers from America and Holland, the brain structure (结构) of ordinary people and 23 of the world's lending memory athletes shows no difference.

Good memories can be trained. New research in the magazine Neuron suggests that a person will get a super memory with just six weeks of hard training.

Researchers found that a technique (技巧) called loci, invented by the ancient Greeks, can greatly help improve memory.

By using loci, you are using your imagination to improve the brain's memory networks. You can link (关联) something you need to remember with a place that you know very well. For example, to remember a list of numbers, imagine yourself walking through your house. Each thing is linked to a number. For example, zero could be the handle on the door and five could be the painting on the wall.

In one study, some ordinary people were given 20 minutes to remember 72 nouns. At the beginning, they could only remember 26 words, but when they were taught loci, they could remember 62 words.

Researchers in the 1960s found bilingual (双语的)people scored higher on intelligence (智力)tests than monolinguals﹣﹣people who speak only one language. The latest studies show that being bilingual does not necessarily make people cleverer, but it probably does make you better at certain skills.

Imagine driving down the highway. There're many things that could attract your attention and you really need to be able to watch all of them. Why would bilingualism make you any better at that?

The answer is that bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention﹣a function (功能)called the executive control system. It's quite possibly the most important system we have because it's where all of your decisions about what to attend to, what to ignore(忽视),what to process are made.

The best method to measure(测量) the executive control system is called the Stroop Test. Suppose you would have the word "blue" written in red, but you have to say the colour red. But "blue" is so eye﹣ catching, and you really want to say"blue". You need to ignore it so that you can say the colour red. That's the Stroop Test.

Bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to, because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to ignore one to be able to speak in the other. This exercise might help in other ways, too. Researchers say bilingual children are more likely to have friends from different cultures. Bilingual adults are often four to five years later than others in developing Alzheimer's disease.
