Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." These are certainly words that millions of volunteers around the world could agree with.

In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, to praise and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to what they care about.

    (1) People who volunteer spend their time doing things they feel strongly about. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal centre to help improve the treatment of animals.

Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people, try out new skills and explore career choices.(2)

Take Andrew Makhoul, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, as an example. Andrew didn't spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19﹣year﹣old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than himself. He travelled to an orphanage(孤儿院)in Guatemala in Central America. (3) And it depends on volunteers to stay open.

Andrew doesn't speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn't a problem,"You communicated with love,"according to an article on his university's website. And what he gave out,he got back,"

(4) " Andrew's first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he'd be back soon﹣ because he saw love and hope.

US author Sherry Anderson once wrote,"(5) " And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do﹣ their work is "priceless".

A. It is in one of the poorest parts of the country.

B. You could see love when you looked in their eyes.

C. Volunteering means choosing to work without being paid.

D. It's a chance for poor children to get better care and support.

E. Life will be difficult, but I have the confidence to live a happy, full life.

F. For young adults, valuable lessons may also be learned through volunteering.

G. Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless.

The game of Go was one of the four greatest artistic types in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment.

Created in China more than four thousand years ago. Go was introduced to Korea and Japan over 1, 000 years ago, and has since become a favorite activity of many people there. Today, Go still serves as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries, as players in these countries take part in many international games every year.

A game of Go has many implications(含义) for real life. It represents a square world of round pieces in black and white. There are 181 black pieces and 180 white ones in total. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions upon millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is similar to how one might solve a difficult problem in life.

Go pays much attention to peaceful competition and coexistence (共存). In a game of Go, the players do not wipe out(消灭) each other's pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. However, in chess and Chinese chess, the players try to wipe out as many of the other side's pieces as possible. The one who forces the other side's commander(主帅)into a dead corner then wins the game. Therefore, Go carries deeper cultural and philosophical connotations(哲学内涵).

Wu Qingyuan(1914﹣2014), a modern Go talent, believed that the final purpose of the game was to try to achieve peace. Instead of fighting as enemies, the two players work together to play an excellent game.

Like you, plants need good things like food, water, and minerals in order to grow. Usually they get these important nutrients(营养) from the rich soil(土壤) in which they're planted. But there's another way to grow plants that doesn't use soil. It's called hydrogenic gardening.

In a hydrogenic garden, plants can use their energy to grow tall instead. And because there is no soil, there are no weeds and few insect pests(害虫).     Scientists hope that, one day, hydrogenic gardens may be able to help hungry people all over the world grow enough food﹣even in countries that have bad soil, or weather that is too hot, too cold, or too dry. Misunderstandings

A man, wearing dirty clothes, with dirty hair and only 35 cents in his pocket, got on a bus and headed straight for the restroom. He thought that if he hid in the restroom,he could ride to New York without paying. But a passenger at the back of the bus saw him.She tapped (拍)the person in front of her on the shoulder and said, "There's a bum in the restroom.Tell the bus driver."That passenger tapped the person sitting in front of him." Tell the bus driver there's bum in the restroom,"he said.

The message was passed from person to person until it reached the front of the bus. But somewhere along the way,the message changed.By the time it reached the bus driver,it was not "There's a bum in the restroom"but"There's a bomb(炸弹)in the restroom."The driver pulled over to the side of the highway(高速公路)at once and called the police. When the police arrived, they told the passengers to get off the bus and stay far away. Then they closed the highway. That soon caused a 15﹣mile﹣long traffic jam. With the help of a dog,the police searched the bus for two hours.Of course, they found no bomb.

Two similar﹣sounding English words also caused trouble for a man who wanted to fly from Los Angeles to Oakland,California. His problems began at the airport in Los Angeles. He thought he heard his flight announced,so he walked to the gate, showed his ticket, and got on the plane.Twenty minutes after take﹣off, the man began to worry.Oakland was north of Los Angeles, but the plane seemed to be heading west, and when he looked out his window all he could see was ocean."Is this plane going to Oakland?" he asked the flight attendant. "No,she said."We're going to Auckland﹣ Auckland, New Zealand."

Because so many English words sound similar, misunderstandings among English﹣speaking people are not uncommon. Most misunderstandings are much less serious.Every day, people speaking English ask one another questions like these: "Did you say seventy or seventeen?""Did you say that you can come or that you can't?"

Similar﹣sounding words can be especially confusing (混淆) for people who speak English as a second language. When a Korean woman who lives in the United States arrived at work one morning, her boss asked her,"Did you get a plate?""No…,"she answered, wondering what in the world he meant. She worked in an office. Why did the boss ask her about a plate? All day she wondered about her boss's strange question, but she was too embarrassed to ask him about it. At five o'clock, when she was getting ready to go home, her boss said,"Please be on time tomorrow. You were 15 minutes late this morning.""Sorry, " she said. "My car wouldn't start, and…" Suddenly she stopped talking and began to smile. Now she understood. Her boss hadn't asked her, "Did you get a plate? "He had asked her, "Did you get up late?"

Auckland and Oakland."A plate"and"up late". When similar﹣sounding words cause a misunderstanding, probably the best thing to do is just to laugh and learn from the mistake. Of course, sometimes it's hard to laugh. The man who traveled to Auckland instead of Oakland didn't feel like laughing. But even that misunderstanding turned out all right in the end.The airline paid for the man's hotel room and meals in New Zealand and for his night back to California. "Oh well, "the man later said."I always wanted to see New Zealand."

A表示正确,B表示错误

(1)A man got on the bus and hid in the bus restroom with a bomb.

(2)The 15﹣mile﹣long traffic jam was caused by the man in the restroom.

(3)The man who traveled to New Zealand actually wanted to fly to California

(4)The boss of the Korean woman asked her if she had got a plate that day.

(5)Misunderstandings happen sometimes because of the similar﹣sounding words.

The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling. This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100 people EVERY HOUR! Russia's population could fall by ONE THIRD by the year 2050! And in Poland (波兰)the population is also going down because people are leaving to work in other countries.

One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe people, especially educated women, have a different attitude (态度)to children than their parents."I have one child and she is enough for me, "said Galina Tereschkova, a doctor from Moscow. "My husband and I both work full﹣time. We can't imagine having more than one child. "Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all. "I don't want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years, "said 19﹣year﹣old student Hana Markova from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18﹣24 year old women everywhere in Europe.

In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of people, usually aged between 20 and 30, are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and since then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Even so, the population of those four countries and many other countries in West Europe is also going down.

Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France, women now receive nearly 1,000 a month for a year if they have a third child.Austrian women receive 700 a month for three years when they have their first child.

(1)Where in the world is the population getting smaller?

(2)How many children does Galina Tereschkova want to have?

(3)What does Hana Markova want to do before she has children?

Eric: Perhaps. But will poor people go and ask for a free coffee? Won't they worry about losing face?
